Thrift Store Finds

I love thrift store shopping.  What can I say?  I am my mother’s daughter. Here are a few pictures of some funny/bizarre/creepy things I saw (but did NOT buy, obviously, I hope):

From top to bottom, left to right:

1. wall plaque

2. owl statue with one missing eye– I sent this pic to Daddy saying “guess where I am?” thinking the answer would be obvious, but he replied “a zoo?”

3. “I love my mudder” vase.  Me too!

4. A framed photograph of a witch’s parking spot, complete with a pun.  Could it get any worse?

5.  Marriage videos

6. An Alaska gown…too funny.

Thrifty Thursday

098

Today I made an overdue and successful trip to the ol’ thrift store.  It was packed, as usual.

My finds:

Skirts – actually only 4 are pictured here, but there are 2 more, including a Susan Bristol with the tags still on.  All of these skirts are brand-name and in like-new condition.

Books – of course! I know I said I was not going to buy any more, but when I actually get around discount books I lose control.  I’m like an addict.  Must. have. books.  Interestingly, a woman actually stopped me in the store to rave about The Shack – and I mean RAVE. She practically hyperventilated while telling me that she took notes on the book and had to remind herself several times that “It’s only fiction.”  You know that panicked excitement that is borderline obsessive?….she had that going on for sure. So, that one comes emphatically recommended.  I have also read excellent reviews of Gilead and I believe I have seen the movie version of The Weight of Water, which was really good.  I have never heard of Shell Seekers, but the cover says: “Month after month an unforgettable New York Times best-seller.”

Empty picture frame and cute folk-ish art that is professionally matted and framed:

Yellowbox flip flops in GREAT condition for only $1.48.  I was so excited.  And what about the little oval painting?  I think it is cute.  I’m sure Brent will hate it and I will probably not be able to find anywhere to hang it, but at 39 cents (!), I am willing to take that risk.

And I did not buy these books, but I thought the titles were so funny – I just had to take a picture.  (Love that I can now take and send pics with my new phone!)

“Repress your anger, think negatively, be a good blamer, and throttle your inner child…..”  Sounds like a winner.  I think it is funny that some one donated the last self-help book they’ll ever need to the thrift store  instead of  keeping it  on hand for future reference.  Is it that good or that bad?

And look at the title on this one.  Ouch.

Was a very successful trip!

We had a great trip to Tennessee.  I’m so thankful I got to take off this year:  my first Christmas + Christmas Eve off since pharmacy school.  Unfortunately, it went by way too fast!

We stopped by Sephora at the Summitt on the way out for one last gift and it ended up taking forever because of all the traffic.  They even had cops directing traffic!  We finally got home – Brent dropped me and Milly off at Mama and Daddy’s and headed to Tellico.

Thursday – Christmas Eve

On Thursday I did some last minute shopping with Mama and Daddy and then headed up for a Christmas Eve breakfast-for-supper meal at Brent’s parents’.  We had pancakes + real maple syrup, sausage, bacon, biscuits, and gravy.  Wonderful!  Maybe the best pancakes ever!

After the Freeman Christmas extravaganza, we went back to Mama and Daddy’s to spend the night.

Friday – Christmas Day

Christmas 2009 160

Christmas day was super busy.  We woke up, opened presents, ate breakfast (first things first, obviously), and then got ready and headed to the Freeman’s for Christmas lunch.  The Freeman family knows how to do a potluck.  Every dish was wonderful – the plates were just not big enough and neither was my stomach!

As soon as lunch was over, it was back to my parents’ for Christmas dinner with my grandparents. Mama cooked the entire meal and it was great.  Even though we were both pretty much still full from lunch, we managed to eat plenty! It was just so good - pork loin, garden corn, rolls, sourdough bread, cheese ball + Reese candy and pumpkin roll for dessert. Deeeelishusss!

When we were wrapping up that dinner, we got a text from Brent’s best friend from high school/college – he and his wife and new baby were visiting his parents, who live right down the road….so we headed down to visit with them.  The baby was just adorable, even though she was afraid of my glasses!  After that, Brent dropped me off at Mama and Daddy’s and headed back up to Tellico.

Saturday – Heading Home

Today me, Mama, and Daddy went thrift store + used bookstore shopping.  Thrift store love runs in the family.  I now have enough books to last for the rest of the year.

We also exchanged presents and I have enough cleanser, lotion, and soap to last all of 2010.  My favorite gift was from Brent: a Canon SLR….yes!!!  I have wanted an SLR for YEARS – since high school at least, when Daddy got one.  It is going to take me FOREVER to learn how to really use this one, but I’m looking forward to it!  It is overwhelming!!  But  I have learned a lot over the past years just by playing with the settings on different cameras and editing programs. It will just take a lot of practice, I’m sure. Some pictures so far:

Tonight when we got home, the house was 51 degrees!!!  Now it has finally warmed up and we are eating supper + watching football + catching up on all of the internet happenings from the past few days.  I’m about to eat supper + read + relax before bed.  Working tomorrow 7-3:30 and so glad I checked my calendar – I thought it was 12:30-9!
