Not recommended: Ruby Falls.
It sounds nice and interesting, and maybe we just picked the wrong weekend. But we had to agree with the 3 year old from our tour group who said to his parents: “When we go home from this place I am NOT coming back!”
The whole experience felt inefficient. We bought tickets in advance, but still had to wait in a long line to get in. Then we were placed in a huge group and forced to go through in a guided tour. What would have taken ~ 1 hour took all morning. There was so much waiting and standing around and squeezing by strangers when you passed them in the little cramped cave walkway. So many people! The heat & sweat from standing in the line outside + the close, cramped quarters inside = not a great olfactory experience.
The falls were definitely spectacular, but to anyone who might suggest that they were considering visiting Ruby Falls on the 4th of July weekend, I would recommend doing a Google search and just looking at the pictures.
After ascending from the underground, there was an observation deck with views of the Tennessee River valley. 
You can see it in his eyes and read it all over his face, what he is really thinking: “When we go home from this place, we are NEVER coming back!”
